(male announcer) this is bay area news station, kron 4 news starts now.a car plunges into a 15-foot-deep body of water near along a san jose expressway. and despite the efforts of first responders. the driver could not be saved. tonight. investigators are trying to figure out how it happened. and why. good evening. the crash happened along the almaden expressway onramp to highway 85 late this afternoon. witness rushed to try to myths rescue the woman. but were unable to reach her.

a dive team from the santa clara county sheriff's department was called in to get her out. but by the time they got there. she had been underwater for nearly 45- minutes. kron-4's scott rates has more. >> take a look >>this just in to the kron 4 news room this it driver missed the ramp and ended up hopping over the curve. and just over the curb. she smashed into the pond. people were getting into the water. 45 minutes later, fire and rescue, that woman out to. she was rushed to santa clara valley medical center where she was pronounced dead. >> we did have a deep dive team come out to get them out of the vehicle. from what they said that she was still in the vehicle with your seat belt on when we

were covered her. >> still no word on why she lost control. scott rates, kron 4. >> all lanes of northbound interstate 880 in oakland are back open this hour. after the c-h-p shut down the freeway to investigate a deadly crash. it happened at about 7-45 tonight near the high street off-ramp. the c-h-p says a honda civic crashed into the center divder. afterward. the driver tried to walk across the freeway. and was hit by at least two cars. the man died at the scene. the northbound lanes were closed for nearly two hours while the c-h-p investigated. >> a man is on the run tonight. after police say he intentionally set a woman on fire this afternoon in the bayview district of san francisco. the victim is in her mid- twenties. this is the man police are looking for. 22-year-old dexter oliver. phillipe djegal has more. >> vicki. suspect. 22-year-old dexter oliver. and, the victim knew eachother. in fact, police say the two

are dating. right now, the victim is being treated in the burn center here at saint francis hospital. witnesses tell the san francisco police that they heard a woman screaming. on hollister avenue between third and jennings at around 12-15 sunday afternoon. police say 22-year-old dexter oliver approached her. threw flammable liquid over her. and, then set her body on fire. police say it's possible that afterwords, oliver walked down the street and boarded a light rail train. investigators not releasing what led to the confrontation. but police say oliver and the victim are dating. here's a look at dexter oliver. police say he's about 5-10. weighing 155 pounds. he was last seen wearing a red and white hoodie. dark pajama pants, with multi-colored shamrock print. with grey and red nike tennis shoes. police say he also has a unique haircut. with a fish carved out on one side of his hair and a lightening bolt on the other. billy ware is a local pastor and lives on hollister avenue.

he says he can't believe the burning happened near his home. >> i think it is awful. the words i have in my heart, being a pastor i will not save them. but i am so glad that we can see a difference gun violence is one thing. but it is setting someone on fire is a another had made him. >> that is another--mayhem >> reporter: right now, police saying dexter oliver is only suspect. he is facing attempted murder charges. including arson. in san francisco, philippe >> san jose police are investigating the first homicide of the year. after a woman found a man's body in the driveway of her home. she made the gruesome discovery at about 8-this morning. at the home on tripoli avenue in san jose's little saigon district. the victim. who police say appeared to have been shot. is said to be a latino man in his 30s. police have not released his name. or how he ended up in the neighborhood.

demo right now, we do not currently have a motive. but the victim was suffering from a least one gunshot wound. that was confirmed in right now we are interviewing witnesses there was a canvas dawn of the neighborhood to determine what happened. if anybody had seen or heard anything new. >> so far. no arrests have been made. >> palo alto police say an alert neighbor helped lead them to a man suspected of stealing packages off front porches in the south bay. 25-year-old andrew philip stafford was taken into custody on new year's day. after the neighbor reported seeing him steal two packages from a house on marshall drive. police say they also found a gun. baton. and drugs in stafford's truck when they arrested him. detectives also searched stafford's storage locker in campbell. and say they found packages that may have been stolen from homes in san jose. >> new tonight. oakland police say they have found a 63-year-old woman who has been missing since friday.

police say gloria gee left her home for work at about 6-30 that morning. and never arrived. she was reported missing by her husband. who believes she is a victim of foul play. ter found in oakland. tonight oakland police confirmed gee has been located. safe. and in good sphere health. the mostly clear skies but there is a storm that is moving off shoresouth partly to mostly skies and the chance of rainfall will still and will be cool in the morning. 40's near the base. as for goal for the day and look for highs to be in the 50s. even this 60s

>> james holmes, shooting. is expected to appear in court tomorrow. holmes is the man accused of killing twelve people and injuring nearly 70 others when he opened fire at a theater in aurora colorado last july. during this preliminary hearing the prosecutors will outline their case against holmes and the judge will then decide if there is enough evidence to send the case to trial. holmes faces multiple counts of murder and attempted murder. >> secretary of state hillary clinton is returning to work on monday for the first time since she was sidelined by a stomach flu. a concussion. and a blood clot.

clinton was released from the hospital on wednesday following three days of treatment. her troubles first started back in december when she fainted from dehydration brought on by the flu. the hospital discovered the blood clot while testing her for a concussion. clinton is scheduled to meet with assistant secretaries of state tomorrow morning. >> still ahead. dozens reported missing as a wildfire rages in australia. searchers dig through the ruins of dozens of homes. as firefighters try to gain the upper hand. and president obama gears up for another fight with congress. this time over the nation's debt ceiling.

>> fifthsyrian president bashar al-assad addressed his war-torn nation in a rare speech. he stood firm against global calls for him to step down. and proposed a peace process that would leave him in power. the obama administration quickly rejected it. more than 60-thousand people have reportedly been killed during a bloody civil war two years. searching for dozens of people who may be missing in wildfires in southeast tasmania. those wildfires have already destroyed more than a hundred homes. also been evacuated from the tasmania peninsula because the fires have blocked roads in and out of the rural communities. firefighters are having a tough time getting the

reached by late february or early march, the united states risks defaulting on its financial obligations. the argument this time around will be over how much congress will agree to cut spending. >> "the bottom line is we can't continue down the path we're on of borrowing money to pay our own debt with, and we've got to have serious spending cuts. we've got to have dollar for dollar within the same year." >> reporter: >> reporter: but key democrats say the debt limit and spending cuts are not related, and a deal based on a dollar-for-dollar offset could further damage the country's credit rating. >> "you're going to say i'm not going to pay my bills unless you stop buying stuff? then stop buying stuff so you don't have future bills. but right now we have to pay the bills that have been incurred. if you want to say cut spending for what we do next, fine. but don't tie it to the debt >> "a big part of balancing this budget is in fact getting people back to work. that balances us twice, so that's another big piece of >> reporter: president obama has said he will not negotiate with congress on whether they should pay their bills. some republicans are now criticizing his fiscal leadership. >> "what's really disappointing to me is that the president isn't generating the discussion on his own, that he has to sort of be dragged kicking and scream, to the table when we have these other big issues like the debt ceiling

to get him to talk about it. i wish he'd lead." >> reporter: i'm elizabeth corridan, reporting. >> president obama has signed a financial aid package for victims of superstorm sandy into law. the bill delegates more than 9-billion dollars to help the government pay flood insurance claims. a congressional vote on a larger. 50-billion dollar aid package is set for later this month. however. that bill is likely to face some tough scrutiny. as lawmakers look ahead to more battles over spending and debt. >> the president is also expected to nominate chuck hagel as the countries newest defense secretary tomorrow. the former republican senator from nebraska. and decorated vietnam war veteran. would to replace strong relationship during their time together in the senate. both men will likely face a lot of questions from congress. on where hagel stands on many key issues. >> when parking around san franciscoyou will now need to feed the meter seven days a week.

the ravens sent him out a winner. by beating the colts 24-9. the loss cut short an impressive season for the colts. who went from last place to the playoffs. as their head coach chuck while battling leukemia. baltimore travels to denver to take on the broncos next saturday. and of course the other big game on saturday - san francisco 49ers host the green bay packers!
